We’ve been rolling out Karmic Labs’ Dash Prepaid Mastercard slowly. The big reason why we wanted to try them is because we wanted to simplify our expense account system. We have employees that range from entry level to executive, and while the executives were fine putting expenses on their own credit cards and then expensing it all later, we wanted to find a solution that would also work for our lower-level and, usually younger, employees. The Dash card allows us to essentially give everyone a company card without a huge credit line. It’s a good in-between to control and keep track of expenses. And the cards are free, so it’s been easy give cards to anyone on our end. In addition, no credit checks are required, which is nice.
We use Expensify for expenses, and I really like it.
QuickBooks Desktop is fine. Our outsourced accounting company handles all of the manual entry. I just give them directions on how I want the entries to be structured, and they manually enter and create reports, etc., for us.
We’ve brought over a lot of stuff from our time at Betaworks, and TriNet is one of those things. We’re still happy with it so far. Our head of operations left a few months ago, so I’ve been taking over some of the HR admin duties, and have had more interaction with TriNet recently. One of the cons I’ve noticed is that a lot of it is still pretty old school. Their web portal is a little old school, and we still have to have lots of calls with our rep, but overall, it’s worked out well. We don’t have complicated HR issues yet, and we’re still pretty small, so I don’t think we’ll run into that for a little bit.
Slack has been good. It’s a good intermediary communication system if you don’t want to get up and walk over to talk to somebody. Our entire team is in the same office, so we don’t have a huge need for an internal communication system, nor do we have to worry about coordinating with people in different time zones. We have some integrations with Slack, like Giphy, but nothing too serious. They’re all for fun stuff inside the chat rooms.
TriNet Ambrose handles our payroll, along with benefits, etc. They do all of it. Internally, the only thing we have to do is give them new hire info, and they pretty much do the rest. And a big pro is that we can just enter bonuses into the system.
