We tried Vero--they had better features for transactional marketing and was a lot better on the developer side, but they had a lot of basic templating things missing, so we went back to MailChimp. This was a year ago so they might have improved the product in the meanwhile.

We’ve used a lot of stuff for email marketing, I’d say we’re very savvy in this category. We’re currently using Vero. As you are starting up, they give you a lot of good marketing automation functionality. It’s cheap, cheerful, and easy to set up. We’ve recently switched from MailChimp Pro.

Vero is a great Australian company that we use for conditional emails. It’s a more sophisticated version of Mixpanel that allows you to trigger emails based on customer actions. It has worked really well for us, and we’re constantly loading it with more email lifecycle templates. It’s very specialized, and highly customizable. And though it’s not as easy to use as MailChimp, it is much more cost effective because you’re not billed on number of subscribers, you’re billed based on volume.
